Summer is here, the weather is warmer, and we know everyone is going to be hydrating more.   Of course, drinking plain water all the time can get a little dull, so many people like to add a few slices of lemon to their water.  Lemon can be great for your health in a few ways:  it aids digestion, Vitamin C, and can even boost your immune system.  Now for the bad news:  The acid in lemon juice can damage the enamel of your teeth.  Enamel is the protective covering and when it gets damaged, it can leave your smile at risk for cavities and other damage.  Weakened enamel is also a leading cause of tooth sensitivity.

How can you enjoy your lemon water without damaging your teeth?  Follow these tips:

  • Brush your teeth before drinking.
  • Drink through a straw to minimize contact with your teeth.
  • Drink it quickly, rather than sipping on it throughout the day.
  • Rinse your mouth with plain water as soon as you finish your refreshing drink.  This normalizes your saliva.
