How Do Clear Aligners Work?
Invisalign treatment consists of a sequence of aligners, each worn for two weeks. The first tray is purposely to be made a little tight when it’s first put in so that it will push the teeth. After two weeks, the second tray pushes the teeth a bit more, the third a bit more, and so on. For extremely small movements, treatment may consist of as few as five sets of aligners, but extensive treatments can exceed 50.
Invisalign is constructed from a proprietary plastic mix, which delivers the optimal amount of force for tooth movement. Contrary to what you might think, teeth actually require a very light force to move! The key is that the force is applied continuously for a long time. Invisalign vs Braces
It’s important to note that Invisalign is not appropriate for use in complex orthodontic cases, so they are not always an option. If they are an option, one nice thing about Invisalign is that they’re more esthetic than braces. A feature that is both a pro and a con of clear aligners is that they are removable. Let me explain; the fact that they are removable makes eating, brushing and flossing easier, which are the pros. The con is that clear aligners only move teeth effectively when they are worn 22+ hours/day, for the duration of treatment. This means that in order to achieve an excellent result, a patient must be extremely diligent with aligner wear for as long as two years!
Braces, on the other hand, come with eating restrictions and tend to trap food. For the type of patient who may frequently “forget” to wear their aligners, braces are a great option because they are glued onto the teeth. I generally prefer treating adults with clear aligners, but they are a viable option for responsible teens as well. Total treatment time for braces and aligners is about the same. There are various pros and cons for both Invisalign and braces. The best option for each person depends on the details of the case as well as the desires of the patient.
